I always enjoy the meetings when we have Directors working with their teams – the lively discussions cover new ideas, planning and setting the directions of the club in the short term, for the next month and often longer-term planning for larger projects.

It’s been another busy Rotary week, with lots of places to be and Rotary discussions taking place:

  • Tuesday – Sam and I attended the ribbon cutting ceremony for the Avenue of Remembrance at The Warf area of Sturt Reserve, which was followed by the Remembrance Service – it was good to see the area looking so good and thanks need to be extended to the RSL for their tireless efforts to make this area a true memorial for those who have served, that we may have the freedoms we cherish today
  • Wednesday – Sam, Elizabeth and I attended a morning tea at Country Health Connect to celebrate the arrival of the lymph-scanner that our club along with other service clubs contributed to. It was great to see Service Clubs working together to achieve results for those who live in our region – as the scanner is quite small, very portable and can be used in a wide range of circumstances
  • Wednesday and Saturday - Jacquie had her Calendar sales people at Drakes again for more sales and spreading the word about the Rotary Projects to benefit
  • Friday – I met with the organisers of the White Park Clubrooms – Murray Bridge Lions – to organise the venue for the Birthing Kits Assembly Day in January 2026. They are only too happy for us to use the facility and are keen, along with members of the U3A to be involved on the day with assembling the kits
  • Friday – Sue met with the Murray Bridge CWA to discuss their involvement in the Birthing Kit Assembly Day – this day will approach fast (with all the holiday activities coming up) so it’s great to see the continued progress by members of the International Committee
  • Saturday – I attended the District Membership Summit at the Walkers Arms Hotel to investigate opportunities for increased membership – this time through Service Projects (and NOT through attending MEETINGS) – it’s always great to get out and heat the ideas of successes at other clubs and share the ideas or gain feedback on an idea you might be thinking about
  • Special thanks to Robin for all his efforts with the IT – allowing face-to-face sessions to be shared with the on-line audience as well as vice versa – maximising the number of speakers and club representatives that could attend
  • Sunday morning – I attended District 9510 AGM – an interesting event – all over in 16 minutes with all the important issues covered
  • Sunday afternoon – the Rotary Youth arts Awards were announced ar the regional gallery – great to see another area of talent in our young artists
  • We celebrated the Rail Bridge turning 100 this week – hasn’t transport come along way – but the bridge doesn’t look a day over 50
  • In my spare time this week, I managed to submit an entry or two into the Service Clubs Association of SA Community Services Awards 2025

This Tuesday we will hear from Dr Kerre Willsher – Central Region Supervisor Rotary Against Malaria – should be interesting considering Malaria has been eradicated from some regions in our part of the world.

Country Health Connect receives Lymph Scanner

On Wednesday 12th November, we were able to witness the unveiling of the anticipated Lymph scanner – a non-invasive, hand-held device that uses microwaves to measure the localized water content in skin, aiding in the early detection of lymphedema. It is particularly important after surgeries for breast, gynaecological or melanoma cancers. It can also be used to measure the effectiveness of treatments, by assessing the extent of swelling in specific areas like the face, neck or limbs. This is so important because early detection means early intervention.
For the patients, it means fewer hospital visits, less discomfort, and a much better quality of life and it means local and regional patients don’t need to travel to Adelaide for care.
The purchase of the device was a combined effort of The Rotary Club of Murray Bridge, The Rotary Club of Mobilong, Murray Bridge Lions, Murray Bridge City Lions and the hospital Sunshine Volunteers.

Rotary in the Community

The Murray Bridge Rotary Club were approached by a Year 9 student from Unity College requesting support with a passion project – a part of the yr 9 Curriculum.

The support required was the use of the Rotary Club BBQ trailer to cook a sausage sizzle to serve to participants in a bike-athon.

On Wednesday 5th November, Jim Cundy took the BBQ trailer to the Imperial Football Oval where the event was being held. He was ably assisted by Sam and Elizabeth Cozens and Paul Willoughby.

The Passion Project was about the Zahra Foundation – supporters of Women needing help following a domestic violence event. The student gave a very inspiring speech about the impact of domestic violence. A guest speaker from the Zahra Foundation was also present and gave a brief talk.

People could contribute to the Zahra Foundation through various activities on the day, namely a lolly jar count, raffle and donations for the sausage sizzle.

This student showed great initiative in organizing the event and is hoping to raise $5000 for the Foundation. Donations are being accepted online until the end of December.

The Rotary Club of Murray Bridge was proud to support this event.
