The first thing I need to say is that I incorrectly wrote in my Board notes and thus announced at last weeks’ meeting that the Board supported members when asking questions of a speaker should do so through the Chairman. The Board decided that that practice was to be dropped. I do apologise for this mistake. So to be clear members may ask questions directly to the speaker.
The Board agreed tosponsor two young people to attend RYLA, Katherine Thiele and Clay Burgess. We look forward to their presentations when they return. Of the four applications we received for the music bursary two students have really stood out. Simon and I are awaiting videos of a solo performance for these two students and will hopefully be able to choose winner.
Sadly in the past four weeks we have four members who have resigned for various reasons - Rob Smyth, Darryl Webb, Ron Lehman and Debbie Scerri. We thank them for being great Rotarians and members of our Club. Each of them have contributed much to the success of various projects. Rob, Darryl, Ron and Debbie we will miss you - thank you for all you have done.
Positive things that have happened this week. We have a prospective new member. The promulgation sheet will be passed around this coming week. It will be great to welcome George into our Club. I feel sure he will be a valuable member. There is also another person interested in doing our Club and I believe his promulgation sheet will be passed around shortly.
Caitlin gave a wonderful Who Am I - I was just exhausted listening to all the things she has achieved in her life so far. Caitlin is now on Leave of Absence as she awaits the birth of her baby. Hope all goes well with the birth Caitlin and you have a baby that sleeps through the night.
Thought for the week from Paul Harris:
“If you have the love of your fellows men (women) in your hearts, my friends you are a potential Rotarian.”
Scam Awareness!
It is scam awareness week!
We recently had a presentation from Sergeant David Brown regarding cyber crime and safety.
He explained that $2.74 billion was taken from Australians due to these common scams:
- investments
- remote access
- romance
- phishing
- payment redirection

Kayla's Story
Rotary Youth Exchanges have been very important in the personal development of young people in the Murraylands. Kayla McDiarmid is a great example being connected to the Rotary Club of Murray Bridge on a youth Exchange to New Zealand in 2011. She told us at our dinner meeting this week this sparked her love for travel and led to her career in the travel industry. She started with Easy Travel and Cruise in Murray Bridge as her first job and has travelled to 52 different countries since including being "stuck in NZ" during covid where she managed a Backpackers. In 2018 she moved to England, has worked for Busabout in Europe and conducted walking tours. The most memorable includes Greece, Croatia and Albania, Warsaw (Food Culture and resilience after WW2), Egypt, India & Sri Lanka. She has now landed in Strathalbyn working with Greg Close again at Live the Dream Travel. You could tell from her confident presentation and manner the personal growth she has achieved. Chair Ali Bolt, obviously also inspired, sincerely thanked her for her presentation. John Scarvelis
Object of Rotary
The Object of Rotary is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and foster:
FIRST: The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service;
SECOND: High ethical standards in business and professions; the recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations; and the dignifying of each Rotarian’s occupation as an opportunity to serve society;
THIRD: The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian’s personal, business, and community life;
FOURTH: The advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional persons united in the ideal of service.
