Our guest on Zoom for The Rotary Club of Murray Bridge meeting at the golf club yesterday was past Short Term New Zealand Exchange student Kayla McDiarmid. She is currently in NZ "stuck" due to covid for the past two years but making the most of it. Kayla was a student at Murray Bridge High School in 2011 and was a School Captain in year 12. At the age of 14 she was sponsored by our club for the exchange. Kayla commenced working in the Tourism industry as a trainee in Murray Bridge then worked for the same company managing one of their Travel Centres on the Sunshine Coast. She has travelled extensively throughout England and Europe as a tourist and in the capacity of a Busabout Travel Guide. Kayla and her partner Liam, ventured to NZ two years ago then covid hit. They purchased a 4x4 drive and have travelled in NZ since. They experienced 5 weeks of lockdown in the south island but have been relatively unrestricted within NZ. She now manages a Hostel in the South Island and Liam gets work in the building industry. He now has an apprentaship which is sponsored by the NZ goverment. Queenstown only got its first taste of community covid last week.
Swap Meet
Buy, Swap or Sell that's the focus of the Murray Bridge Rotary Swap Meet today at Eastside Murray Bridge. Recycling things in our out of control throw away society. There was lots of "stuff" for sale including cars, car parts, metal art, motor bikes, canoes, cycles, rabbit traps, kayaks, telescopes, garden gnomes, movie cameras, glassware, tools, fishing gear and you could even bring your own trailer. You never know what you might find there. Rotarians from the Rotary Club of Murray Bridge cooking for the large crowd at the Rotary Swap Meet at Eastside in Murray Bridge. Proceeds go to local and International Rotary community projects. Starting at 5am and going till 1pm or so in near perfect weather. We needed three shifts and 15 or so at each shift to keep up with demand led by Project leader Rotarian John Whimpress. Some of the sellers stay overnight at the oval and we thank them for their participation. One of our major fundraising projects in our Rotary Year. Rotary projects like this one are an exciting way to reach out and connect with the community. It builds teamwork and comaradrie. Members are made up from a diverse range of vocations.

Solomons Project
The project in the Solomons is chugging along, despite the disruptions caused by the pandemic, riots and political unrest. Fortunately, Dalousu community where the project is being implemented is free of covid. Situated on the island of Malaita no one from that community were involved in the riots.
The boat is being used to transport people from Dalousu to Auki for various things – visits to hospital, shops, and markets and also to take their fishing catch to market. See photos attached – red boat is the one which was purchased.

FOURTH: The advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional persons united in the ideal of service.
End Polio Now
In 1985 Rotary launched PolioPlus to immunize every child in the world against polio. Working with our partners and members of the global health community, together we will end polio.
Through the science of vaccines, Rotary & partners have saved nearly 19 million children from becoming paralyzed by polio. Learn more about our work to End Polio Now and how you can get involved: https://on.rotary.org/3eqtrrr
Rotary has been working to eradicate polio for more than 35 years, and we’ve made incredible progress in the fight to rid the world of it forever.
It’s crucial to eradicate polio from the last two countries where it remains endemic and to keep other countries polio-free.
If all eradication efforts stopped today, within 10 years, polio could paralyze as many as 200,000 children each year.
What is polio?
Polio, or poliomyelitis, is a paralyzing and potentially deadly infectious disease that most commonly affects children under the age of 5. The virus spreads from person to person, typically through contaminated water. It can then attack the nervous system.
