Meeting Report

This week is VOLUNTEER WEEK. The Rotary Club of Murray Bridge chose to assemble 200 Birthing Kits to be sent to Zimbabwe via Zonta and the No Barriers Foundation to help overcome barriers to education of young girls there. We had a lot of fun whilst supporting this great cause project. Rotary brings together leaders and ordinary people from various parts of the community, sales men & women , shopkeepers, doctors, nurses, lawyers, farmers, horticulturalists, teachers, vets, public servants, plumbers, marketers, electricians, engineers, publicans, business owners, IT experts, mechanics, each with skills in their vocations they are prepared to share and work for the benefit of the local and international community. We were led by our Rotary International Director Roxanne Rowland following up from a recent presentation by No Barriers Foundation Executive Director Sigrid Pfaflle. It took us less than 25 minutes to assemble the 200 kits. Rotarians people of Action.

Building a school for the world’s poorest children — Gemma Sisia's story

Australian-born Gemma Sisia had many doubters when she declared she wanted to build a school for children in Tanzania.

Proving them wrong was the incentive she needed.

More than fifteen years later, Gemma provides hundreds of children the chance to receive an education, as well as daily meals and transport.

The flow-on effect has seen families and the wider community flourish and she has no plans to slow down.

Further information

Originally broadcast March 2020

Just after this conversation went to air, Gemma had to hurry back to Tanzania due to the outbreak of COVID-19.

All schools in Tanzania closed for three months, so St Jude’s students had to return home, but the school kept up their learning with home packs, containing study materials, cleaning products and staple foods, delivered to their homes.

142 St Jude’s alumni have now graduated from university through a program for graduates, called Beyond St Jude’s (BSJ).

Another 290 have attended university by other means.

In December 2021, the first seven St Jude’s educated doctors graduated from university, supported by BSJ.

This has been a dream for Gemma since establishing the school.

On January 29, St Jude’s celebrated its 20th birthday. 1,800 students, 300 staff and many alumni came together for a day of celebrations.

Object of Rotary

The Object of Rotary is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and foster:

  • FIRST: The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service;
  • SECOND: High ethical standards in business and professions; the recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations; and the dignifying of each Rotarian’s occupation as an opportunity to serve society;
  • THIRD: The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian’s personal, business, and community life;
  • FOURTH: The advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional persons united in the ideal of service.

End Polio Now

In 1985 Rotary launched PolioPlus to immunize every child in the world against polio. Working with our partners and members of the global health community, together we will end polio.

Through the science of vaccines, Rotary & partners have saved nearly 19 million children from becoming paralyzed by polio. Learn more about our work to End Polio Now and how you can get involved: https://on.rotary.org/3eqtrrr

Rotary has been working to eradicate polio for more than 35 years, and we’ve made incredible progress in the fight to rid the world of it forever.

As a founding partner of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative, we've helped to reduced polio cases by more than 99.9 percent.

It’s crucial to eradicate polio from the last two countries where it remains endemic and to keep other countries polio-free.

If all eradication efforts stopped today, within 10 years, polio could paralyze as many as 200,000 children each year.

What is polio?

Polio, or poliomyelitis, is a paralyzing and potentially deadly infectious disease that most commonly affects children under the age of 5. The virus spreads from person to person, typically through contaminated water. It can then attack the nervous system.
