Meeting Report 3376
At our Rotary Club meeting we enjoyed a talk from Murray Bridge local, Kay Haig. Kay’s topic was “Inner Wheel” and some details of the Mobilong Inner Wheel Club. Inner Wheel was born during WW1 from a group of UK women known as Rotary Ladies. Before becoming a constituted organisation, the wives of the Liverpool Rotarians in England had assisted their menfolk during the war with various projects and had become known as Rotary Ladies. They later called themselves The Service Club. Many similar Clubs under various names were formed to help Rotarian husbands. However, it was the Manchester Club which in 1924 provided the name and model rules upon which the Inner Wheel movement is based. The emblem is a small wheel contained within the Rotary Wheel, hence the name Inner Wheel. At an early stage in its existence Inner Wheel began to spread overseas and in Australia, the first interest meeting was held in Ballarat, Victoria during 1931. Within Australia there are approximately 140 Clubs and 3000 members. The Mobilong Club has 26 members and is an active club supporting one of their key programs “Cord Blood Research”. Beginning in 2000 as a 5 year program, to date $2.9m has been raised. Inner Wheel is open to all women over the age of 18 years.
